The U.S. Department of Education stated that New Jersey school districts must pay for and provide Independent Educational Evaluations (IEE) unless they can demonstrate sufficient evaluations. You may request an IEE once per evaluation/re-evaluation period. However, IEE may include multiple assessments that you request. The IEE must be conducted by an approved (THE PARENT TRAIN) agency, professional, or clinic of YOUR choice.​

​State-sponsored facilitation is a free service provided by the New Jersey Department of Education, Office of Special Education (OSE). It allows for a neutral third party (facilitator) to play a crucial role in promoting effective communication. The facilitator assists the IEP team in developing a mutually acceptable IEP, ensuring that all voices are heard and understood. State-sponsored IEP facilitation is voluntary; both the parent and the district must agree to participate in the facilitated IEP meeting, providing a platform for open and constructive dialogue.

Some important time frames:

• The district must schedule an eligibility meeting within 20 calendar days of receiving the parent's request.
• The district has up to 15 calendar days after the eligibility meeting to notify parents if they are going to evaluate their child for special education services.
• Once my consent is given, the district needs to evaluate , determine eligibility , and develop my child’s IEP – if eligible – within 90 calendar days from the consent.
